Tevo Howard - “Summer Romance”

This unique Art+Sound 180 gram vinyl only is the second release on our own Sounds of the Universe label and features music from Tevo Howard on one side and exclusive hand-etched art engraving by graphic artist Kutmah on the other side.

Djing for over 20 years, (since being injured in a skateboarding accident in 1987), holding various degrees in music, writing etc., son of bluesman Rick ‘Poppa’ Howard… Tevo Howard is a Chicago house don!

Tevo’s sound is laced with the arpeggiated groove of successive waves of ’80s transatlantic synth-dance, italo, post-punk & pop that preceded house,; the banging drum machines and melancholy melodic focus of Detroit’s club-music exports; the sugary formulas of cutting records’ stable & NY dance; and the contemporary club music of his occasional base in Berlin - but it’s a sound matured at home in the heart of house music, Chicago, the perennial capital of house music.

With “Summer Romance” he’s offered up a prolonged, driving round trip through full-bodied, hollow-tipped, percussion-centric early house, partnered with elegant n wistful chords and one of the catchiest melodies we’ve ever heard on a house track. Straight-up body music, slightly drugged, 110% fun. WE LOVE TEVO.

Graphic artist Kutmah is the California-raised illustrator and DJ who has worked with many of the Los Angeles underground electronic hip-hop community - Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi and Dabrye - through his affiliation with the Dublab collective and the groundbreaking electronic/hip-hop club ‘Low End Theory’.

Unique Art ­+ Sound hand-etched 300 copies 180gm vinyl limited 12” art-piece/music single from Hieroglyphic Being/2Yang.

This is the first release on the new Sounds of the Universe label, launched by Soul Jazz Records.

Hieroglyphic Being is one of many names for Jamal Moss, the influential producer operating on the Chicago electronic music fringe for more than 20 years. Moss takes influence from Chicago’s musical heritage - from mentors like Adonis, to the spiritual esotericism and other-worldly harmonies of Sun Ra (resident in the city 1945-61) and the experimental acid of another local legend Larry Heard.

‘Shikaakwa’ is the native American name for Chicago. Mind-blowing, deep and joyful unclassifiable music, taking a thumping tape-crunched drum track programmed with a molecular attention to detail through a 9-minute tour of cosmic, cascading high-frequency synthesis and free-form melody. 2Yang aka Yoshi Tsuyama is the name of anarchic illustrator, graffiti artist, designer and sculptor living and working in Osaka, Japan.

This single consists of the new Hieroglyphic Being track on one side of the disc and accompanying graphic vinyl-etching by 2Yang on the other side.

This is the kind of track that gives you goose pimples and you start imagining crazy stuff, i normally day dream that DJ EZ couldn’t make it to Blue Orchid and last minute someone said ‘What about the black girl with the sick moves and white loafers who works in that record shop down the road’ i happen to have a bag of records, i put this on and i kill ‘em, euphoria spreads and then i’m crowned. You might just listen to it. Whatever.

Just been reissued.

Really looking forward to the new Portishead single ‘Chase The Tear’. Love the way they constantly evolve musically, never losing the intensity and always brilliant.
